Jordan Leung Brings “Back to Work” to Hong Kong Next Week

The comedian behind @69ranch takes his deadpan humour to TIDES, with shows in English and Cantonese.

You might know Jordan Leung by his name. You might know him as @69ranch. Or you might have come across his comedy while scrolling through Instagram. Next week, the Hong Kong comedian is bringing his “Back to Work” tour to TIDES in Whampoa, taking his sharp, deadpan humour from the feed to the stage.

Leung describes himself as a “Hong Kong American stand-up comedian floating somewhere between the US and Hong Kong.” That cross-cultural perspective runs through a career built across both places, with performances in English and Cantonese giving him different ways to connect with his audience.

From American Open Mics to Hong Kong Stages

Leung developed his stand-up in the United States before returning to Hong Kong in 2020 as the pandemic spread. What he initially expected to be a temporary stay became a new chapter in his comedy career.

Finding his footing here meant getting closer to the language and rhythms of local life. In a 2022 interview with Hong Kong Free Press, he spoke about learning Cantonese slang and catchphrases to connect with Hong Kong audiences. By then, he had already staged two headline shows, including a bilingual performance, with tickets selling out within two days.

Performing in two languages isn’t simply a matter of translating the same jokes. In a 2024 interview with Ming Pao Weekly, Leung explained that his English and Cantonese sets differ because some jokes only work in Cantonese. Each language gives the material its own possibilities.

More Than the Guy on Your Feed

As @69ranch, Leung has built an online following with comedy touching on Hong Kong’s social habits and pop culture. But his career extends well beyond short clips. His 2024 “Low Energy” Hong Kong run included three performances at MacPherson Stadium: one in English and two in Cantonese.

His upcoming schedule also takes him beyond Hong Kong, with November appearances listed in Singapore, Melbourne and Sydney. Before those stops, “Back to Work” brings him to a hometown audience.

The show listing describes a style influenced by Stephen Chow and Norm Macdonald, combining Hong Kong cultural references with dry, straight-faced humour. For audiences who prefer a sharp observation to a big theatrical delivery, that’s a promising mix.

Catch Him at TIDES

The Hong Kong run features an English show on Saturday, October 17, and a Cantonese show on Sunday, October 18, both starting at 8pm. Updated event coverage also lists an additional performance at 5pm on October 18. Tickets are listed at HK380andHK480.

You’ve seen him on your feed. Now catch him on stage. Pick your language, grab your tickets, and give yourself a night off. Jordan Leung will take care of the jokes.
