One of Australia’s best-loved comedians is playing Hong Kong for the first time. Dilruk Jayasinha is at TakeOut Comedy Club on 6 and 7 November, and with only two nights at a club that size, tickets won’t hang around.
How a coffee in Melbourne turned into a Hong Kong show
This happened because of Hong Kong comedian and producer Maitreyi Karanth. She was performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and after her own show she went to see Dilruk’s.
“His was a big room and packed,” she says. “His storytelling was flawless. He took us through his struggles of the year, with so many hilarious twists. He’s a very likeable guy. The kind you want to root for.”
So she sent him a message on Instagram, they met for coffee, and he was in.
Who is Dilruk?
Dil grew up in Sri Lanka and moved to Melbourne for university. He studied accounting and got a job at one of the Big Four firms. Then he got let go. In 2010 he tried an open mic, and that was the end of accounting.
Since then he’s become one of the most in-demand comics in Australia. He sells out stand-up shows around the country, and Australian TV audiences know him from shows like Utopia, MasterChef Australia, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and Have You Been Paying Attention? In 2018 he won the Logie for Most Popular New Talent. He’s done the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Galas and Just for Laughs, and his 2020 special, Bundle of Joy, is on Prime Video worldwide.
What to expect
Dil’s comedy is personal. He talks about his own life, he’s upbeat, and he’s easy to warm to. If Maitreyi’s night in Melbourne is anything to go by, expect big stories that keep twisting, from a guy you’ll be rooting for by the end.
The critics agree. Herald Sun called him an “extremely endearing comedian who wears his heart on his sleeve,” and Chortle said he has “a likability that burns bright.”
